Doula is a Greek word referring to an experienced woman who helps other women. The word has now come to mean a woman experienced in childbirth that provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth.
Women intuitively and instinctively know how to labor and give birth. Women are empowered when they understand that birthing and raising a child is our instinctual right. Our bodies are designed to easily do this and that knowledge helps women move beyond their fears. Pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period are milestone events in life. These experiences profoundly effect women, babies, fathers, and families, and have important and long-lasting effects on society.
In 2001, I became a birth doula, then later a post partum doula, breast feeding counselor and prenatal educator. I use visualization and relaxation methods, in addition to traditional doula techniques to help you achieve a quicker and easier labour.
Your partner and I become the perfect support team, with my guidance your partner will be able to participate at his comfort level and be more effective for you. Nurses and the doctor have priorities that compete with the emotional care of the woman, such as shift changes, clinical responsibilities, etc. As your Doula my priority is to stay with you until after the baby is born.
